Willmar man faces fleeing charge; allegedly fled deputy at over 100 mph

WILLMAR -- Dennis James Vosbury, 23, of Willmar, made his first appearance Tuesday on a felony charge of fleeing a peace officer for allegedly fleeing from a Kandiyohi County Sheriff's deputy at speeds over 100 mph early Sunday morning.

Unconditional bail was set at $10,000. His next appearance is July 16.

Vosbury also faces three misdemeanor charges in Kandiyohi County District Court of driving while impaired and reckless driving.

According to the complaint, a deputy was driving along Lake Avenue in Spicer around 2:30 a.m. Sunday and noticed a slow-moving vehicle that the driver stopped in a parking lot for a short period of time before noticing the deputy was watching and then accelerating onto County Road 10 and then south on Highway 23. The deputy pursued, at speeds of up to 103 mph in an attempt to catch up, as the vehicle exited the highway onto County Road 9 and finally stopped at Willmar Senior High School after it passed two Willmar Police squad cars that were situated at the intersection with County Road 90.

The driver, identified as Vosbury, claimed he hadn't fled from the deputy, but had stopped at the first opportunity. The complaint notes that deputy activated the lights and sirens on the County Road 9 off-ramp from Highway 23.

Vosbury smelled of alcohol and a breath test showed a blood-alcohol concentration of 0.144. The legal limit is 0.08.
