Willmar man faces third-degree assault charge for allegedly hitting a woman during dispute

WILLMAR -- Brian Joseph Cash, 48, of Willmar, made his first appearance Monday on a third-degree assault charge for allegedly hitting a woman during a domestic incident Friday evening.

Unconditional bail was set at $10,000 with conditional release allowed on his personal recognizance. His next appearance in Kandiyohi County District Court is May 10.

Cash also faces a misdemeanor domestic assault charge.

According to the complaint, around 11 p.m. Friday, two Willmar police officers were dispatched to an altercation along the 1600 block of Fifth Street Southwest. The caller reported that a man and woman were arguing outside of a vehicle, that the man had hit the woman and forced her into the vehicle and then drove away. The caller described the vehicle and the man.

The officers located the couple nearby. The man, identified as Cash, was arrested. The woman was taken to Rice Memorial Hospital in Willmar for treatment of an injury to her lip.

She told officers that they'd gone out that evening, that she'd told him she didn't want to stay at home with him and attempted to leave, but he prevented her from leaving in the vehicle, hit her in the face and then stopped her from leaving in the vehicle again. She'd walked away and he followed her with the vehicle. The woman said she got into the vehicle when he told her he'd take her to the hospital. However, he didn't drive to the hospital and she got out of the vehicle again. That's when officers arrived.

Cash was interviewed by officers. He said they went out for drinks at two establishments. He said he'd hit her, but in self-defense.
