WILLMAR — The cause of a fire that damaged a home Wednesday at 306 Litchfield Ave. S.E. in Willmar remains under investigation by fire officials.

According to Willmar Fire Chief Gary Hendrickson, fire crews were called around 11:45 a.m. Wednesday to the home. The homeowner’s small dog alerted the residents to the situation just before the smoke detectors began detecting smoke from the blaze, he said.

The residents, and the dog, were able to get out of the home safely, Hendrickson said.

The home is owned by Nathan and Loralee Herrboldt, according to property tax records.

There is significant damage to a second-story, three-season porch and bedroom at the rear of the home and to the third floor, with smoke and water damage throughout the home, Hendrickson said.

Fire crews from Willmar, Kandiyohi, Spicer and Pennock remained at the scene until approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday.

Traffic on U.S. Highway 12, also Litchfield Avenue, was redirected around the blaze for about four hours, with cars and trucks directed onto Sixth Street Southeast onto Benson Avenue and then onto First Street.

Also responding were the Willmar Ambulance Service, Blomkest Fire Department, Kandiyohi County Sheriff’s Office and State Patrol.
