Willmar, Minn., man sent back to secure unit at Prairie Lakes
WILLMAR — On Monday, a district judge ordered Andrew Charles Wyman be sent back to the secure unit of Prairie Lakes Youth Programs for violating the rules at the non-secure program of the youth detention center.
District Judge Kathryn N. Smith also ordered a 30-day review hearing, set for Jan. 7, for the now 19-year-old man sentenced to the youth facility on arson, burglary and theft charges for his role in the two-week crime spree of stealing and destroying vehicles and setting fire to an occupied Willmar home in May 2011.
During the review hearing in Kandiyohi County District Court, Smith noted that Wyman had violated the rules by having a cell phone at Prairie Lakes and being absent from his workplace and subsequently being fired from his job. She also noted that efforts were made by probation officials and Prairie Lakes officials to help Wyman stay in the non-secure unit of the program.
Wyman and his accomplice, Chase John Hodapp, 20, of Willmar, were both charged with multiple felony counts after the crime spree. Wyman was sentenced to a juvenile sentence, with a stayed adult sentence of 75 months in prison, in September 2011.
While he was serving his juvenile sentence, Wyman absconded from Prairie Lakes in February and was taken into custody April 3 by CEE-VI Drug Task Force agents. He admitted during an April 23 hearing that he and his roommate absconded from Prairie Lakes and then he hitchhiked to California.
In May, Judge Smith ordered Wyman to return to Prairie Lakes and complete the programs in both the secure and non-secure units of the center. He was also ordered to pay $100,000 in restitution.
Hodapp was sentenced to 39 months in prison in the case. According to the State Department of Corrections website, Hodapp is at the Minnesota Corrections Facility at Stillwater. His expected release date from prison is July 3, 2013, and his release date from supervision is Aug. 2, 2014. He was ordered to pay $39,219.54 in restitution and $450 in fines.
