Willmar, Minn., mayor signs tax abatement papers for renovation project

Email

WILLMAR — Mayor Frank Yanish said Monday he has signed the papers necessary to allow a 10-year, $189,750 property tax abatement for Torgerson Properties’ $12 million hotel and conference center renovation project on U.S. Highway 12 East.

The council on April 15 voted 6-1 to approve the abatement. But Yanish said later that he would not sign the agreement until he saw that the council’s Community Development Committee would be discussing tax abatement policy.

Yanish said he signed the papers Friday after seeing that the committee’s agenda includes discussing tax abatement policy at the upcoming Thursday afternoon meeting. The committee will discuss tax increment financing policy, business subsidy policy and policies for use of tax abatement.

Yanish said he hopes the committee comes up with a policy that is agreeable to everybody.

Also, Yanish said he had a great conversation with Torgerson Properties CEO Tom Torgerson who Yanish said graciously agreed to give preference to local companies when awarding bids for the hotel and conference center project.

“You and the other citizens of Willmar will be very proud of the finished product,’’ Yanish said Torgerson told him.

Torgerson told the Tribune Monday that his goal from the beginning has been to hire local contractors when appropriate. He said he has local businesses under contract.
