WILLMAR -- A local teenager will travel to Mobile, Ala., this weekend for an upcoming national scholarship competition.
Janessa Palmer, of Willmar, will leave Sunday to participate in the 56th Distinguished Young Women National Finals, to be held June 27-29 at the Mobile Civic Center Theater. Palmer is one of 50 state representatives competing for a share of more than $100,000 in cash scholarships and the opportunity to represent the program as the Distinguished Young Woman of America for 2013.
Following her selection as the Distinguished Young Woman of Minnesota, Palmer began preparations for the national competition, where she will compete in scholastics, interview, fitness, talent and self-expression.
Palmer will spend two weeks in Mobile, participating in team-building activities, completing community service projects and getting to know the community of Mobile.
If selected as the Distinguished Young Woman of America, Palmer will spend the next year representing the program across the country through various appearances and promoting the program's national outreach initiative of "Be Your Best Self."
Palmer is a 2013 graduate of Willmar Senior High School and the daughter of Amy Juel-Palmer and Robert Palmer.
