WILLMAR — A major gift by Prinsco, Duininck Concrete and Duininck Inc. of Duininck Companies LLC has brought a capital campaign for the Kandiyohi County Area Family YMCA to over the halfway mark.

The $100,000 gift from the three companies will help the Y expand its facilities to meet growth and demand.

Trevor Duininck, spokesman for Duininck Companies LLC, said in a news release that supporting the Y’s capital campaign is “a great way for us to invest in the community where we live.”

“The Y supports healthy, active families and provides a values-based place for kids to spend time — it’s a real asset to Willmar and we’re glad to be able to participate,” Duininck said.

The Y’s goal is to raise $3 million to expand the facility by almost 50 percent. The project will include construction of a new multipurpose gymnasium, a specialized fitness room, a large wellness studio and two racquetball courts. The wellness center also will be expanded.

The Y opened in 2002 with facilities designed for 3,000 members. Today it has 5,800 members. The expansion will accommodate the increase in membership as well as projected growth in the immediate future.

The capital campaign, which began last summer with gifts from board members, staff and campaign leaders, has been under way since late September.

“Within the last 60 days we have seen a dramatic increase in support, which indicates tremendous support for the Y and our capital project,” said Theresa Wittenberg, executive director. “The YMCA has played such a significant role in the community and the lives of the people that live here, we know everyone will want to support this important campaign.”

Leaders at the Y are “sincerely grateful and appreciative to all of our volunteers and donors,” she said.
