Willmar Municipal Utilities warns about phone scam

WILLMAR — Willmar Municipal Utilities is alerting customers about a phone scam.

Stacy Stien, customer service supervisor, said today a phone scam is being perpetrated on customers where the scammer calls and warns utility customers that their electricity will be cut off unless they wire money to the name and address the scammer gives the customer.

Stien warns customers to not pay the scammer and to contact the Municipal Utilities to verify you are, in fact, up for disconnection. Willmar Municipal Utilities does not use money wiring or disconnect power without going through the proper process, said Stien.
