Willmar ousted by Albert Lea
WILLMAR -- Albert Lea outshot Willmar 13-6 and pitched a first-half shutout en route to eliminating the Cardinals from the Section 2A playoffs by collecting a 2-1 win in the quarterfinals Thursday.
The No. 5-seeded Tigers (10-8) got a breakaway goal from Ariel Christensen in the 22nd minute of the first half as they used a north wind and good team speed to press the attack the first half.
Chloe Donoho and Sara Kallhoff each got a clean shot on the Albert Lea goal in the first half, but both shots were routine saves for Tigers' goalie Anna Brouwers.
Kallhoff got a shot past Brouwers late in the second half to trim the Tigers' lead to 2-1. Donoho assisted on the goal. Albert Lea scored eight minutes into the second half to go up 2-0.
"The wind was a factor tonight," said Willmar coach?Chelsea Brown. "It's hard. This ended our season. It's hard that it ended this early and it shouldn't have."
Jordan Martins made 10 saves, while Brouwers had to make just five saves to get the win.
The fourth-seeded Cardinals (9-8-1) were without junior forward Baylie Young due to a head injury.
This was a rematch of the 2008 Section 2A final at Albert Lea when the Tigers won a 2-1 shootout.
