Willmar outkicks Apollo in boys soccer
ST. CLOUD -- The Willmar Cardinals will go into the playoffs on a high note after edging St. Cloud Apollo 2-1 on Saturday in Central Lakes Conference boys soccer.
The victory, which ended a three-game slide, gives the Cardinals a final record of 7-7 in the CLC and a 10-8 overall mark heading to Tuesday's Section 2A playoff 4 p.m. tilt at Kennedy Field hosting Central Minnesota Christian.
Abdinasir Abdi and Abshir Ahmed scored for Willmar. Badal Ali, who assisted on the first goal, had a big game at sweeper in front of goalie Steve Kluver, who was solid with eight stops.
"That is the best team we've beaten this year," said coach Richard Courtney. "We bounced back from a tough week. Defenders Matt Horning and Tim King and midfielder Trent Fader each had excellent games."
