Willmar places fourth in Pumpkin Classic
MOORHEAD -- The Willmar volleyball team placed fourth out of 12 teams at the annual Pumpkin Classic over the weekend.
The Cardinals defeated Osseo and Win-E-Mac before dropping close matches to Duluth East and Moorhead.
"It's been a long time since we have even had a chance to play in the championship of the (Pumpkin Classic)," Cardinals coach Terrin DeBoer said, "so I am proud of the girls for working hard and playing well."
Cardinals hitters Stacy Minnick had 27 kills, Addy Nelsen had 22 and Katie Lippert had 19. Minnick also had 9 ace serves and Nelsen registered 5.
Minnick had 11 ace blocks and Lippert had 10. Willmar setter Riley Grussing made just three errors in 185 attempts and had 66 assists.
The strong tournament performances should serve the Cardinals (9-10 overall) well as a tune-up for their Section 2AAA opener at Chaska (12-10) on Wednesday, DeBoer said.
"I am looking forward to that match because we are two teams with similar records," DeBoer said, "and I think that the girls have a really good chance to play well and win."
