WILLMAR -- The Willmar School District may start catering school lunches for Community Christian School in Willmar this fall.

Annette Derouin, director of food and nutrition services for the Willmar schools, told the School Board about her proposal this week.

Derouin said she was asked to submit a proposal to the school.

If the proposal is accepted, the School Board could approve a contract at its July 11 meeting.

Under the proposal, the district's food service would provide meals and a staff member to serve meals and to prepare and clean up the CCS kitchen, she said.

The rate proposed would be $2.50 per meal for students and $3.50 per meal for adults. The school has 225 students in grades K-12.

Catering from CCS would be done out of the kitchen at Willmar Senior High, Derouin said.

The Middle School cafeteria already caters to five Head Start sites and the Area Learning Center, Derouin said, and would be overloaded with the additional work. CCS would receive the Senior High menu with an age-appropriate alternative choice for younger children, Derouin said. The district would also sell healthy choice ala carte food.

In addition to the meals, CCS would be able to participate in the Farm to School local foods initiative and other special events planned by the food service. Derouin said she expects her department to have revenue of about $17,000 after expenses from the contract. Funding in the food service program can only be spent there, and reserve funds are used to maintain, repair and replace food service equipment.
