Willmar soccer team rallies past Tigers, 3-2
ST. CLOUD -- In the end it was the smallest guy on the field that made the biggest impact in Willmar's Central Lakes Conference 3-2 win over St. Cloud Tech Tuesday.
Handerson Tevalan netted the Cardinals' first goal and assisted on the other two tallies in a game in which Willmar (4-1-1, 7-2-1) coach Jeff Winter said was pretty physical.
"Ironically it was the smallest player that won it," said Winter. "(Handerson) really controlled the play in the middle. When we were losing he was the sparkplug that kept us going."
Tevalan set up Jose Hernandez's game-winner in the 78th minute by outsprinting the Tech (1-4-2, 3-5-2) defense down the sideline. Tevalan shook off the Tigers' defense and fired a cross to Hernandez who was standing nearly alone on top of the penalty box. Hernandez then lined up a shot that the Tech goalie had no chance to defend, said Winter.
Cesar Jimenez tied the game at 2-2 for Willmar midway through the second half.
The Cardinals host Brainerd in another Central Lakes Conference match at 5 p.m. on Thursday for Parents Night.
