Willmar squeezes out win
WILLMAR -- The No. 5 hitter in any lineup wouldn't be the one to place a bunt with the bases loaded in the bottom of the ninth inning in a tie Cornbelt League game.
But Alex Marcus did.
The Willmar Rails' designated hitter popped a suicide squeeze down with one out in a 6-6 tie with the Bird Island Islanders. Matt Sagedahl scored the winning run with an error on the throw.
The Rails (7-6, 7-6) scored three runs in the eighth, thanks to three consecutive walks from Bird Island pitchers and Mark Krogstad's two-run single.
In the ninth, Matt Sagedahl took a walk to start the inning, then took second on Lane Kleist's sacrifice bunt. It forced Bird Island to intentionally walk Josh Dahlke, who hit a two-run home run in the third inning. The Islanders then intentionally walked Matt Seehusen, bringing Marcus to the plate.
Bird Island scored two runs in the first off Willmar starter Darin Ditterich.
But the Rails rebounded with an unearned run in the third and Dahlke's homer to left field.
Jason Scheffler pitched three innings of relief for the win.
