DULUTH -- Any Willmar Stingers July 4th celebration fizzled in the eighth inning at Wade Stadium on Monday.

In a see-saw Northwoods League meeting, the Duluth Huskies scored twice in the bottom of the eighth inning to overcome the Stingers' three-run rally in the top of the inning and snare an 8-7 victory.

The two Duluth runs were gifts. The Stingers' third pitcher, Jack Shannon, walked two Huskies and hit a third, to load the sacks. Kurt Spomer came out of the pen in an attempt to hold the 7-6 with one out. But an error at third let in the tying run and when Spomer hit a batter with two outs and the bases loaded letting the go-ahead run trot home.

Mitch Rowen's second hit, a single to lead off the ninth, had the Bees back in business but he was stranded on second.

The loss wasted a pair of homers by Jason Leblebijian, who finished 3-for-5 with 3 runs and 3 RBI.

By losing two in a row on their North Country swing, Willmar fell to 16-14, a full game behind the third-place Huskies, now 16-12. The team beat Brainerd on Saturday after a rain-out on Friday in St. Cloud.

The Stingers scored three runs in the top of the eighth on a Leblebijian single, an Eduardo Gonzales double and a Sean Dryer RBI single that closed the Huskies' lead to 6-5. A fielder's choice brought in Gonzales with the tying run and Jarid Scarafiotti singled in Drwer with the go-ahead.

Willmar scored three in the third to go up 4-3. Rowan's RBI double was followed by Leblebijian's two-run homer.

Shannon took the loss, his first decision. Dylan Vogt got a gift "W" after allowing four hits and three runs in one inning of work.

Willmar has two more games in the Twin Ports before returning to Bill Taunton Stadium to meet the Thunder Bay Border Cats on Thursday evening.

Blake Shepherd) and Garrett Borba each had two RBIs, but the Willmar Stingers fell to the Brainerd Lakes Area Lunkers, who scored three runs on two hits in the bottom of the third inning and never surrendered the lead.

Willmar responded with a two-run fourth inning on a two-out, two-run double by Shepherd, but that was as close as the Stingers would get.

John Haberman (Pacific) took the loss after allowing four runs in four innings.
