Strong finishes by Mowlid Mohamud in second and C.J. Seifert in third gave the host team a one-point win, 40-41, over Alexandria Tuesday. They both passed the lead Alexandria runner in the final 100 meters, although Zach Hodgson hung tough and would finish fourth only a fraction of a second out of second place.

"Give Alexandria credit," said Willmar coach Jerry Popp. "They wanted it just as much as we did."

The two teams had tied at the Alexandria Invitational on Oct. 3.

The Willmar girls took fifth place led by Jayne Cole in 13th place and Erin Sheehan in 20th.

Alexandria's Jamie Piepenberg won her third straight girls individual title, but Sartell won the team title by two points over Alexandria. Sartell seniors Heidi Peterson finished second and Hannah Kellerman, the 2006 champion, third.

Brainerd senior Jimmy Dean led the boys race start to finish covering the 5,000-meter course on the Eagle Creek back nine in 16:58.

Willmar will also host the Section 2AA meet on Oct. 29.

The Willmar boys were second last year to Alexandria and runnerup to Brainerd in 2007. The Cardinals won three consecutive Central Lakes Conference titles starting in 2004.
