Willmar's Brown wins 8AA crown
ST. CLOUD -- Willmar senior Andrea Brown won three matches Wednesday to win the Section 8AA singles championship at Gold's Gym indoor courts.
Brown defeated Aaryn Anderson of St. Cloud Tech 6-4, 6-4 in the final. Brown had lost to Anderson, the Tigers' No. 1, twice already -- during dual-meet competition and just last Friday in the sub-section tournament by a 6-1, 7-5 score.
"Andrea played so smart and so well, it was just a lot of fun to watch," said Willmar head coach Erika Kath. "When she won, we all celebrated like we'd won state."
It will be Brown's first state trip in tennis, but the three-sport athlete already has competed in state tournaments in basketball and fast-pitch softball.
Brown started with a 6-0, 6-1 win against Dani Evans of Bemidji, whom she'd beat a day earlier (6-3, 6-0) in the 8AA team semifinals. She then took out Ashley Leister of Thief River Falls 6-2, 6-3 to reach the final.
Anderson won a true-second match over Leister (6-0, 6-0) to advance to state as section runner-up.
Anderson will also lead the Tigers into the state tournament after Tuesday's 5-0 win over Bemidji in the team final.
Brown will play in the Class AA quarterfinals on Oct. 28th at the 98th Street Racquet Club in Bloomington.
In doubles, Leslie Marcus-Allie Ellingson of Willmar fell in the quarterfinals to Stacy Lofgren-Amy Boyer of Bemidji 2-6, 3-6. The Bemidji duo went on to finish runner-up to section champions Leslie Engdahl-Melissa Lisbon of St. Cloud Tech.
