Willmr boys wins sixth straight
WILLMAR -- The Willmar Cardinals extended their winning streak to six games on Saturday with a 64-47 non-conference victory over the Moorhead Spuds.
Taylor Filipek scored 23 points to lead the Cardinals (7-2), who, after three consecutive non-conference wins, return to Central Lakes Conference play on Thursday at Little Falls.
Willmar, which lost at Moorhead last year, 67-55, leads the overall series 4-1.
The Spuds (1-4) were led by 6-4 junior center Michael White with 15 points.
The Cardinals trailed 7-4 out of the gate, but a steal and layup by Isaiah Streed triggered a 22-3 Willmar run for a 26-10 Willmar lead. It was 36-19 by halftime.
Streed finished with 11 points and Jordan Smith with 10 points and nine rebounds.
Willmar held a 32-18 rebound advantage over the Spuds.
Willmar coach Steve Grove started sitting his top eight players with nine minutes left and a 32-point lead.
Forward Sam Esboldt and guard Andrew Bangen were first in.
The entire bench had emptied with five minutes left, allowing 17 players to see action.
Grove said Reeves, a 6-5 sophomore, has cemented a starting role with his consistent play.
"He's got an incredible leaping ability and a good shot around the basket," said Grove. "And for a sophomore, he's been very composed."
