Wind advisory in effect today in southwestern Minnesota
WILLMAR -- A wind advisory is in effect in southwestern Minnesota this afternoon, including Granite Falls and Redwood Falls in this region. Willmar is not in the advisory, which affects areas south and west of a line from Montevideo to New Ulm to Fairmont.
The National Weather Service Twin Cities office in Chanhassen says sustained west winds will increase to between 25 and 30 mph today, with gusts increasing to around 40 mph. These winds will diminish shortly after sunset, and the advisory ends at 7 p.m., but sustained winds will remain up around 20 mph through tonight.
The Weather Service says a large storm system is expected to bring much needed rainfall across the Upper Midwest over the next few days, along with strong winds. A cold front is moving eastward across the area today, bringing west winds.
Precipitation will become very light tonight, but another round of more widespread rains should develop on Thursday into early Friday. The Weather Service also says cooler temperatures should be expected Thursday and Friday, with warmer weather returning on the weekend.
