Wind chills of 25 below expected early tonight in west central Minnesota, winds to calm later

As temperatures fall this evening, a brief period of wind chills near 25 below zero is possible across west central Minnesota tonight before winds calm.

In its latest forecast, the National Weather Service in Chanhassen said the winds will be north northeast tonight around 6 mph before calming.

Another clipper system will bring snowfall at times from Sunday afternoon into Monday for part of the region. Most of the snow will likely be light, with accumulations of one to two inches expected in central Minnesota.

The latest extended forecast for the Willmar area is:

Tonight: Increasing clouds, with a low around -18. Wind chill values between -20 and -25. North northeast wind around 6 mph becoming calm.

Sunday: A 30 percent chance of light snow, mainly after noon. Cloudy, with a high near 9. Wind chill values between -9 and -19. Light wind becoming south between 11 and 14 mph.

Sunday Night: A 50 percent chance of snow, mainly after midnight. Cloudy, with a low around 9. Wind chill values between -8 and 2. South wind 5 to 14 mph becoming west.

Monday: A 50 percent chance of snow. Cloudy, with a high near 21. Northwest wind between 3 and 11 mph.

Monday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 6.

Tuesday: Partly sunny, with a high near 20.

Tuesday Night: Mostly cloudy, with a low around 7.

Wednesday: Scattered flurries. Partly sunny, with a high near 18.

Update 9 a.m. - Wind chill advisory extended to noon north of Kandiyohi Co., may return tonight

A wind chill advisory has been extended through noon today for portions of central Minnesota and mid morning across most of west central Minnesota.

The National Weather Service in Chanhassen said the advisory includes the areas of St. Cloud, Belgrade, Glenwood, Morris, Alexandria, Long Prairie and Little Falls and northward.

North winds up to 10 mph coupled with temperatures between 10 below and 15 below zero will result in wind chills values from 25 below to 35 below through noon.

The National Weather Service warns individual to dress properly if you are going outside this morning with as little exposed skin as possible to protect against frostbite and hypothermia.

As temperatures fall this evening and before wind speeds become calm, a brief period of wind chills near 25 below zero is possible across south central Minnesota into west central Wisconsin.

Another clipper system will bring snowfall at times from Sunday afternoon into Monday for at least a part of the region. Most of this snow will likely be light and current indications are that this event will only produce accumulations of one to two inches in central Minnesota. However, it may arrive in time to impact the Monday morning commute.
