Winter storm forecast to bring 6-9 inches, snarl travel by Wednesday

WILLMAR -- Welcome to winter in Minnesota. Travel will become difficult tonight and dangerous on Wednesday, the National Weather Service warns, as a winter storm is forecast to bring from 6 to 9 inches of snow to central Minnesota.

The Weather Service says near blizzard conditions will occur Wednesday across western Minnesota and along the Minnesota River Valley. The Wednesday morning and afternoon commutes are expected to be greatly impacted.

A winter storm warning for heavy snow and blowing snow has been issued by the National Weather Service Twin Cities in Chanhassen starting at 9 p.m. today and through 6 a.m. Thursday. The warning area includes the bulk of the state.

The warning statement says occasional light snow today will become steadier tonight and heavy at times by Wednesdsay. Snow will taper off Wednesday evening. Northwest winds will increase and become gusty Wednesday and Wednesday night, producting blowing and drifting snow.

The warning is located along and north of a line from Comfrey to Mankato to Woodbury in Minnesota and Hudson to Ladysmith in Wisconsin.

Other areas, except for the Interstate 90 corridor, are in a winter weather advisory.
