As of 10:45 a.m., Kandiyohi, Meeker and Stearns counties are now in a winter storm warning area that includes the metro area, north-central Minnesota and a large piece of Wisconsin.

The blizzard warning has been changed to include Renville and Redwood counties and includes much of south-central Minnesota.

Both warnings are until noon on Friday.

Forecasters expect snow to rapidly develop this morning, increase in intensity this afternoon and then taper off late tonight.

The snow accumulations for the local area are expected to be 3 to 6 inches, with the 6 to 12 inches expected over east central Minnesota and west central Wisconsin, including the Twin Cities.

The snow will be accompanied by winds from 15 to 25 mph, with gusts to 35 mph, mainly late this afternoon and through Friday morning.

The snow and wind will combine to make visibilities limited to a quarter or half mile, and wind chills in the teens below zero.

Citizens are advised to travel only in an emergency and if they must travel, take along winter survival gear including a flashlight, food, water and extra clothing.
