Winter storm warning starts at 1 a.m. Sunday, snow, sleet, ice forecast

WILLMAR - The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm warning for west central Minnesota.

Regional counties in the warning, from 1 a.m. to 1 p.m. Sunday are Pope, Lac qui Parle, Chippewa, Swift and Kandiyohi counties.

The winter storm warning replaces the winter storm watch previously issued for the region.

Snow is expected to develop after 9 p.m. in west central Minnesota and spread northward into central MInnesota after midnight. The snow will change to a mixture of snow, sleet and freezing rain before 6 a.m. Sunday.

The precipitation should change over to all rain after noon Sunday.

Between 2 and 4 inches of snow is expected with locally higher amounts north of a line from Morris to St. Cloud to Mora. From 0.10 to 0.30 inches of ice is also expected.

The snow, sleet, rain and ice could create dangerous driving conditions. Power outages are possible due to the combination of icing and wind gusts to 30 mph.
