The National Weather Service has issued a winter storm watch for the region this weekend.
A storm system is expected to lift northeast from the southern Rockies into the Upper Midwest over the weekend, spreading snow into the region late Saturday night into Sunday night. The Weather Service said the system will be accompanied by a surge of warm air that will bring a wintry mix of precipitation across much of southern Minnesota.
To the north and west, precipitation is likely to be all snow, with as much as 6 to 8 inches possible Saturday night into Sunday night along and north of a line from Granite Falls through Litchfield to Cambridge. Cities in this winter storm watch include Willmar, Alexandria and St. Cloud.
North and northwest winds will increase to 20 mph Sunday afternoon and Sunday night, with gusts in excess of 35 mph. The strong winds will create blowing and drifting snow and white-out conditions in some areas. Travelers are advised to continuing monitoring the latest forecast.
