SPICER — Mild weather greeted the fitness crowd Saturday morning for the 8th Frozen 5k road race during Winterfest.

This year’s event showed 172 finishers on the out-and-back 3.1-mile run along Lake South Avenue from Saulsbury Beach to the Bible camp. The number is down 10 from a year ago.

With the temperature just below freezing, the greatest hardship was the climb up camp hill coming back while facing into a westerly wind. The conditions easily beat 2009 when the race was shortened to about two miles due to 30-below wind chill or another year when a cold rain fell.

Ben Burgett, 16, of Spicer went unchallenged at the front finishing in 18:16. He is a sophomore at Community Christian School in Willmar and a two-time Class A state qualifier in cross-country.

Tracy Sik, 42, first in the frigid ’09 edition, won the women’s division for a second time. The Kandiyohi County Family Service financial worker has been running for 12 years. She captured the Glacial Ridge Championship Running Series overall title for women for 2012.

Mick Quinn, 38, of Willmar took second to Burgett in a time of 19:47. He was the male co-winner, with Steve Lueders, in the 2012 running series.

Just two seconds back of Sik was Brianna Rohne, 28, of St. Paul in a time of 21:06. Kristine Duininck, 39, place third in women’s and Jessa Hanson, 13, of Spicer was fourth.

Next in the Glacial Lakes series is the 2nd annual St. Patrick’s Day Red Beard 7k Run from the Oaks at Eagle Creek GC in Willmar.
