Wisconsin couple shot by man posing as deputy

WILSON, Wis. (AP) -- A Wilson man and woman were shot by a man who invaded their home posing as a sheriff's deputy.

St. Croix County Sheriff's Chief Deputy John Shilts says the man entered the home of Tom and Maria Erickson about 11 p.m. Saturday demanding money and drugs.

He was wearing a T-shirt that said "Sheriff," a baseball cap and his face was covered. Shilts says he had a rifle, and forced the couple to the ground while pretending to call for backup.

They realized he wasn't a deputy and there was a scuffle. Shilts says the suspect shot Tom Erickson in the abdomen. Maria Erickson was shot in the calf. She was not hospitalized. Tom Erickson was in stable condition Sunday at Regions Hospital in St. Paul.

Authorities were still looking for the suspect.

Shilts says marijuana was found in the home. A 3-year-old child was not injured.

The St. Croix County district attorney will consider possible charges.
