Memphis Grizzlies head coach Dave Joerger received permission to interview with the Minnesota Timberwolves, who are searching for a replacement for Rick Adelman.

Joerger, a Staples, Minnesota, native whose professional ties to Wolves’ president Flip Saunders go back several years, led the Grizzlies to a 50-32 record and the seventh seed in the Western Conference playoffs. Memphis lost in the deciding game of a best-of-seven series to the Oklahoma City Thunder with All-Star Zach Randolph serving a one-game suspension in Game 7.

Since the end of the season, the Grizzlies underwent major changes in the front office to the extent Joerger will not soon know the exact chain of command above him.

CEO Jason Levien and assistant general manager Stu Lash were fired. Levien was instrumental in hiring Joerger last year to replace Lionel Hollins, who also led the Grizzlies to the playoffs before being let go.

Lead attorney David Mincberg, who was involved in hiring Joerger, is assuming a greater role in the front office.

Adding to the confusion, 36-year-old managing owner Robert Pera reportedly helped conduct player exit interviews independent of Joerger.

Adelman retired at the end of the 2013-14 season.
