Woman survives explosion of rural Clara City home

CLARA CITY -- A rural Clara City woman was seriously injured, but is alive, after being pulled out from the rubble of her two-story home after it exploded early Saturday morning.

Janice Harms was initially taken to the Chippewa County Montevideo Hospital and later airlifted to North Memorial Medical Center in Robbinsdale where she was in critical condition.

According to the Chippewa County Sheriff's Department, a home at 10085 20th St. SE in Crate Township was leveled in the explosion, which was reported at 3:35 a.m.

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department, Clara City Fire Department and Clara City ambulance were called to the scene and told the Harms was believed to be inside.

A backhoe was used to clear rubbish and debris away and Harms was found.

In a press release, the Sheriff's Department said Harms was "miraculously" located "under the two stories of home that had fallen down" and that crews "worked tirelessly to free Harms from the rubble."

The Chippewa County Sheriff's Department was assisted by the Clara City Fire Department, Clara City Ambulance and the State Fire Marshal's office.
