Women's College Basketball: Golden Rams’ defense wears down Warriors

Email

COON RAPIDS — Ridgewater had Anoka-Ramsey right where it wanted at halftime Saturday, but the No. 4 Golden Rams’ defense wore down the Lady Warriors in the second half as Ridgewater was sent home with a 72-58 MCAC South loss.

Ridgewater, fighting for a spot in the state tournament, owned a 36-34 lead at intermission after shooting 52 percent (12-for-23) from the field in the first half. But the Lady Warriors were only 5-for-25 (20 percent) from the field in the second half as Anoka-Ramsey outscored the visitors 38-22.

“We’ve been struggling finding the bucket since the Christmas break. We’ve broke 60 points only once,” said Ridgewater coach Carrie Ogdahl. “Granted we won twice with (scoring) 50 (points), but it’s tough to win in this conference doing that.”

Ridgewater fell to 2-3 in the division and 12-6 overall. The Golden Rams, one of the top NJCAA Division III teams, won their 15th game in 19 tries and are a perfect 5-0 in the South. Three players scored 15-or-more points for the division leaders.

“In the first half we looked really, really good, but in the second half we just got run down,” said Ogdahl. “The defense in the South is crazy. Forty minutes of in-your-face defense. We handled the full-court pressure well, but we just wore down.”

Jessica Kalenberg and Lynsey Runke scored 10 points each for Ridgewater while Kristin Phillipp, Cameo McNeley and Raeann Sorenson added 9 more apiece. Runke and McNeley added 7 rebounds each.

Fergus Falls, a team battling with Ridgewater for a playoff spot, travels to Willmar on Wednesday for a 6 p.m. contest.
