Wrestling: Kimball slams ACGC
Tribune Staff Report
GLENWOOD -- There will be no Cubs in hibernation mode in Kimball at the state wrestling tournament this season.
The Kimball Cubs successfully defended their Section 5A title by overwhelming Atwater-Cosmos-Grove City 45-16 in the championship match Friday at the Minnewaska Area High School.
Kimball, ranked No. 2, won 11 matches and never trailed against No. 3 ACGC. The Cubs took an early 13-0 lead behind a pin, decision and major decision.
But the Falcons soared back and won three of the next four matches to tie the dual at 16-16.
Hayden Rouser needed just 38 seconds to pin his opponent at 126 to ACGC on the board, and after the Cubs won a 5-4 decision at 132, the Falcons had Matt Meyer earn a second-period pin at 138 and top-ranked Larry Bomstad collected a 12-2 major decision at 145.
But it was all Kimball after that as the Cubs, who won last year's section final 31-28, took the final seven matches.
The Falcons were within striking distance through 170, but Kimball delivered a back-breaker when Travis Wills upset No. 2 James Nelson 4-3 in triple overtime at 182 to take a comfortable 32-16 lead. The unranked Wills also beat No. 7 Dillon Knutson of Belgrade-Brooten-Elrosa in the Cubs' 59-6 semifinal win.
Austin Schiefelbein's 6-2 decision at 195 then sealed a return trip to the state tournament for Kimball.
The Falcons routed Paynesville 51-13 in the semifinals to reach the championship match.
The team state tournament is Thursday, March 1 at the Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul. The individual section tournament is next Friday and Saturday at Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted High School in Howard Lake.
