MINNEAPOLIS -- Xcel Energy customers in southern Stearns County and northern Kandiyohi and Meeker counties could go without power until late tonight or early Friday.
At 1:09 a.m. today a transformer failure in Paynesville's electrical substation caused 5,400 customers to lose power, said Mary Sandok of Xcel Energy's corporate headquarters in Minneapolis. The power outage included customers in Paynesville, Eden Valley, St. Martin, Roscoe, Belgrade, New London and Spicer.
Sandok said Xcel Energy transported a mobile substation to Paynesville today, but power could be out for the affected towns until early Friday because of the repair work needed.
"We're working as quickly as we can to get it back on but its kind of a big project to get it all hooked back up again," Sandok said.
