GRANITE FALLS -- No charges are currently pending in Minnesota against the individual who produced a gun during a law enforcement interview Tuesday at a home in Clarkfield, but Yellow Medicine County Sheriff Bill Flaten expects to release more details about the incident late this afternoon.

The case involves multiple jurisdictions, and Flaten said during a phone interview Thursday morning that he has a meeting today with the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension about its investigation of the gun incident, and also will attend a meeting across the border with authorities in South Dakota about an ongoing investigation there before he makes another statement.

The interview Tuesday in Clarkfield, in western Minnesota, was with agents from the South Dakota Division of Criminal Investigation, and the Yellow Medicine County Sheriff’s Office was there only to assist. The interview -- with a person who has not yet been named -- lasted about 90 minutes before a handgun was produced, Flaten said. A shot was fired during a struggle between the person and the interviewing officers.

No one was injured by the gunshot nor in the struggle, Flaten said Tuesday in a news release. Officer secured the weapon and the scene and the state BCA was called to assist.

The person has not been held in Yellow Medicine County but has been in custody in a secure facility since the incident.
