YME blanks BOLD

OLIVIA -- Yellow Medicine East scored 14 points in less than 30 seconds and made that stick in a 14-0 win over BOLD in a Section 5AA semifinal football game Saturday.

The Sting (7-3) will play top-seed Eden Valley-Watkins for the section title at 7 p.m. Friday at Big Cat Stadium in Morris.

Mason Hegna converted an eight-yard pass play for a second-quarter touchdown to give YME a 7-0 lead. Then BOLD fumbled the kickoff and the Sting got the ball back on the 20-yard line. Derek Dyrdahl took the first handoff 20 yards to the right side of the field for a TD and a 14-0 lead.

That would be the game's only scoring, but it was enough for YME's defense.

The Sting frustrated the Warriors' running game, holding BOLD to 102 yards. Alex Steffel had 96.

That forced the Warriors to pass and YME took advantage, intercepting two passes -- both by Dyrdahl -- and held BOLD to 6-of-21 passing for 47 yards.

"The last time we played them, they beat us 28-7 (on Sept. 25)," YME coach Mike Gaffaney said. "Our defense had something to prove."

Bobby Lecy ran eight times for 107 yards and completed 3-of-7 passes for 29 yards and one TD. Tyler Sand had nine total tackles to lead the defense.
