YME certifies levy

GRANITE FALLS -- Yellow Medicine East board members certified a new levy this week.

The certified 2010 levy will be $2,147,496, payable in 2011, as compared to $1,736,241 in the current year.

The levy for the general fund decreased, but the levy for the debt service increased, according to a Truth-in-Taxation presentation prior to action on the levy at the regular meeting Monday.

Board members also reviewed the district's annual audit, which showed the district has increased its overall fund balance. The district's financial position looks favorable for meeting the challenges expected when the state Legislature adopts a new state budget, according to Superintendent Al Stoeckman.

In other business, board members approved a new three-year contract with the superintendent. It maintains the same level of compensation through the three-year period but offers an increase in contributions for a tax-sheltered savings program.

School board members also extended appreciation to outgoing board members Elmo Volstad and Rich Jepson for their years of service.
