Young stops 35 shots in Card net
WILLMAR -- After not having playing to an overtime tie all season, Willmar has tied an opponent in two straight games as the Cardinals and Brainerd/Little Falls skated to a 1-1 tie Thursday in a Central Lakes Conference girls hockey game.
The previous game for Willmar saw the Cardinals get knotted up 3-3 with Alexandria on Tuesday. Like that game, Willmar was also outshot by nearly a 2-1 margin by the Flying Warriors (4-6-2, 8-11-2).
Baylie Young made 35 saves against Brainerd/Little Falls while her teammates were able to get off just 20 shots.
"Baylie Young was rock solid in goal," said Willmar coach Lee Wierschem. "Three games in a row she has given us an opportunity to win."
The Flying Warriors scored first on Hailey Joyce's goal 1:19 into the second period. Jennie Mattison then got Willmar on the board nearly 10½ minutes later on an unassisted goal. Mattison made a move across the slot to fired a shot that got past Brainerd/Little Falls goalie Kierra Howard.
Mattison also had a chance near the end of regulation to possibly give Willmar the win, but her shot just glanced off the pipe, according to Wierschem.
Willmar hosts Sartell/Sauk Rapids on Monday for "Pack the Rink Night."
