‘Jazz In January’ dinner and dance slated for Saturday

WILLMAR — Music Matters presents their third annual “Jazz In January” dinner and dance Saturday at the Holiday Inn & Willmar Conference Center.

The doors open at 5:30 p.m. and the dinner will be served at 6 p.m. The deadline to purchase dinner tickets has passed.

The entertainment will begin at 7 p.m. with music by Willmar music students.

The Mill Pond Jazz Orchestra will play for the dance that starts at 8 p.m. Tickets for the dance are $10 per person and $25 per family and are available at the door.

There will be a short dance instruction/refresher provided by Sheila Bass.

Throughout the evening there will be bidding on the silent auction items.

Music Matters is a community group that supports quality music education and experience for youth in Willmar Public Schools. They raised money from donations from the community fundraising efforts throughout the year including previous “Jazz In January” events.

In December 2013, they allocated more than $25,000 to fund various music department needs. Funds were awarded to the high school choirs for accompanists and concert attire, the high school band for instruments and the high school orchestra for instruments and accompanists.

The middle school child guide program received money for instrument repair, the middle school band for instruments, the middle school orchestra for cellos and the middle school choir for a sound system.

The elementary orchestra received money for instruments.

Goals for future funding allocations are additional band and orchestra instruments for both high school and middle school and a new keyboard for the senior high choir and music department.
