Funding for government lapses as short-term spending bill stalls in the Senate

Barbershop concert is Saturday

The West Central Connection Barbershop Chorus will present its annual spring concerts at 4 and 7:30 p.m. Saturday at the WEAC in Willmar.

Some of the songs they will perform are "Dream, Dream," "I Miss Mother Most of All" and "Irish Rose."

The featured quartet will be "OC Times," the 2008 International Barbershop Quartet Champion.

Inspired by artists like Michael Bublé, Frank Sinatra and Elvis, OC Times "breathes new life into swing standards, rock and roll classics, and favorites from a variety of other genres." Hailing from Orange County, Calif., the group reportedly takes barbershop harmony back to where it started over a century ago -- pop-culture. They have been featured in major publications such as The Wall Street Journal, Saturday Evening Post and SPIN magazine and are also featured prominently in an upcoming documentary film entitled "American Harmony."

There will be two additional featured quartets -- "Sound Image," a local quartet with Todd Mattison of Willmar singing tenor; William Lorenz of Benson on lead; Kevin Kiffmeyer of St. Cloud singing bass and Bob Starz of Atwater singing baritone; and "Northern Lights," a women's quartet who are all members of Sweet Adelines International and sing with the Spirit of Harmony Chorus based in Spirit Lake, Iowa.

Also performing will be members of the Youth Festival Chorus. The West Central Connection Chorus sponsored a Youth Harmony Festival in January for high school male singers. A total of 52 young men from eight area school districts learned three songs in traditional barbershop style.

The After Glow will begin immediately after the 7:30 p.m. show for a small donation. It is an informal time to meet the performers. It will be held at The Oaks at Eagle Creek. The quartets, chorus members and OC Times will be performing other songs for your enjoyment.
