Go purple: Dayton proclaims Prince Day for Tuesday

ST. PAUL - Tuesday is Prince Day in Minnesota on what would have been the music superstar's 58th birthday.

Gov. Mark Dayton issued a proclamation Monday honoring Minnesota native Prince Rogers Nelson. He died April 21 at his Paisley Park home. Prince was born June 7, 1958, in Minneapolis.

The proclamation declares: "Prince was one of the best-selling recording artists of all-time; a prominent singer, writer and multi-instrumentalist, he went on to create revolutionary music and an iconic identity, which later inspired a movie, known as 'Purple Rain'."

The seven-time Grammy award winner created "the Minneapolis Sound, a contribution not only to the global catalogue of music genres, but to Minnesota's worldwide prominence and its economic growth," the proclamation reads.

Dayton urged Minnesotans to wear purple on Tuesday.

The West Central Tribune is asking those who wear purple to snap a photo and send the image to for publication on our website.
