Community celebrations


SPICER -- WinterFest 2010 activities this Saturday include the men's softball tournament from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.; the broomball tournament at 10 a.m. and the Green Lake radar runs from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.


Prairie Woods ELC

The Prairie Woods Environmental Learning Center welcomes hikers, snowshoers and skiers on the grounds during daylight hours at no cost. The seven miles of ski trails are open from 9 a.m. to sunset. No dogs on ski trails, and pets should be on a leash. Ski and snowshoe rental is available from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Saturday, noon to 5 p.m. Sunday and other times by appointment. Winter family fun day: 1 to 4 p.m. Sunday; $5 per person, $15 max per family. Celebrate winter with outdoor activities for everyone in the family; snowshoeing, cross country skiing, winter birding and animal tracking. Ski and showshoe rental included, ski instruction provided by volunteers.

Sibley State Park

Interpretive Center open during the week; call 320-354-2002 for hours.

Sibley State park programs are on the weekends at the Interpretive Center and are led by the park naturalist or visiting expert. A vehicle permit is required to enter the park and they are available at the park office. For more information call 320-354-2002.

Snowshoe hike: 2 p.m. Saturday, weather permitting. Following a brief talk, a naturalist will lead a beautiful and exhilarating winter hike. Snowshoes will be provided to the first 20 people, 10 years of age and older, who call for reservations, 320-354-2055. Kids must be accompanied by one adult.

Cross Country Ski lesson: 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sunday. Learn the turning, flat, downhill and uphill techniques. Kids welcome, must be accompanied by an adult. Need your own equipment. Reservations required, limit of 12. Call 320-354-2055.

Physical activities

Willmar Civic Center

Skating and curling will be either in the Civic Center or the Blue Line Arena; $2 for all ages; $1.50 skate rental, unless otherwise stated.

Open skating: 6:30 to 8 p.m. Sundays

Leisure time hockey, adults only: 7:45 to 9:15 p.m. Sunday

Youth open hockey, grades 4 through 9: times will vary on Monday evenings.

Open curling, age 8 and older: 5 to 9 p.m. Saturday; stones and brooms provided.

B PeeWee youth tournament: Saturday and Sunday

Outdoor skating rinks

Warming houses: Garfield, Lincoln and Hilltop, open and staffed, at 4 p.m. school days, 1 p.m. weekends and school holidays; close at 9 p.m. nightly.
