ST. PAUL, Minn. - Gov. Tim Pawlenty says state appointees would be included in any work furlough plan to minimize the potential for layoffs if the economy gets worse.
Pawlenty's negotiators for state employee contracts have proposed having union workers take up to 48 days of unpaid leave in the next two years.
Pawlenty said Tuesday at the Capitol that there's no current plan to furlough state workers, but he's seeking authority to do it if needed.
He says if there are furloughs, nonunion employees would be included.
The state is facing a two-year, $4.6 billion budget deficit, and Pawlenty has called on all state employees to accept a wage freeze to help close the gap.

The two MNSCU faculty unions have already offered to freeze wages for the next two years, and MNSCU had to think about it before accepting. So at least one large group of state employees has been proactive in helping out.Report a Violation

It seems like the State payroll is the last to get tightened up, no reason everyone can't share the recession, better than losing your job all together. Most state employees have way more vacation and comp time than the average worker so shouldn't hurt them too bad. Welcome to the real world.
