ST. PAUL (AP) - The Minnesota Department of Human Services is cutting 200 full-time positions in a program that cares for people with mental illnesses.

Minnesota Public Radio News reports the cuts are a portion of $17 million in reductions for state services that are part of Gov. Tim Pawlenty's latest budget proposal. Human services officials say positions will be eliminated in part by closing several small state mental health facilities in Cold Springs, Mankato and Eveleth.

Officials say they should also be able to eliminate some jobs through attrition and eliminating unfilled jobs. Assistant Human Services Commissioner Read Sulik says a larger reorganization is intended to make sure that direct care won't be affected by the job cuts.

But the head of Minnesota's National Alliance on Mental Illness says she's skeptical that current care standards can be maintained in the midst of a $17 million cut.
