ST. PAUL — A Republican move to force a Minnesota Senate debate on the federal health care overhaul has fallen short.
The Democratic-run Senate voted 22-45 against bringing a resolution on the issue up for a debate. All but one of the Democrats voted against the move.
Senate Republicans say Minnesotans deserve to know where their state legislators stand on the biggest issue of 2010. Their resolution would urge members of Congress to oppose the health care overhaul and urge the state attorney general to prepare litigation against the changes.
Democrats say the Republicans waited too long to introduce their resolution and should go through the normal committee hearing process. The bill is scheduled for a hearing in a Senate health policy panel.
