Beth, if you sincerely, earnestly, honestly, believe that this has nothing to do with Somali and Latino people occupying these Twin Homes built for people of low to moderate income, then you are living in a fantasy world.

Jay, you are giving false information when you say that they don't want Somali and latino people living by them. The only person who has ever brought that up was Councilman Gardner. I highly doubt that anyone has ever said that to Garnder. Since Garnder lied at the last meeting I will have a very hard time believing anything that he has to say in the future.

It appears Willmar's mayor is out of touch with his constituency. Good luck on your re election campaign, if Willmar voters are smart they will get rid of him, the mayor is dead weight now in the city of Willmar.

Shelley, evidently, those in opposition feel they don't. They also don't want Somali and Latino people living by them.

Interesting choice of words, Lila. "People who don't have the capacity to own their own home...shouldn't own their own home" What kind of people?

Dan, I've asked this question several times. What do other communities think of their partnership with SWHMP? How has it worked for them? No one has seemed to answer that. Low-income families deserve just as safe of housing as high-income families. Maybe they don't need central vac or a 3-car garage or brick fronts with vaulted ceilings and chandeliers in the foyer. But they do need safe housing, not ruins.

First off...I admit nothing of Ron Christianson's comment on race/religion other than it was for CLARIFICATION purposes. I do not recall hearing him make any other comments on the race/religion issue. It was Gardner who started that. Second, my reference to fixing up the "delapitated houses in ruins" was just that...fix...or rebuilding on site. Isn't that comparable to what Habitat for Humanity does?!! I don't think we need to plant a whole new project of low-income housing into an exsisting neighborhood and run the risk of it turning into another bad, run-down neighborhood. Note the phrase..."run the risk". Again...not a racist view...just a historical one.

Most of the people in Willmar are willing to help their neighbors if we can do it as good stewards of what we already have. Let’s use our resources for projects like that. We shouldn't ignore the bigger picture and let existing willmar homes become like the homes of north minneapolis while we develop new project housing to further strain our system. I'd prefer to live in an all-american city known for revitalizing neighborhoods rather than becoming an all-american welfare city that overextends itself and burdens the taxpaying citizens.

Low-Income familes need to live somewhere! It seems like a no-brainer to offer them a new housing facility as opposed to "delapitated houses in ruins". Eventually, we'd be able to demolish the houses in question. There is more to life than images- I bet the occupants would choose to not live in these less-than-adequate homes, but a lot of them have no choice. I assume most of you read and commented on the article yesterday regarding the high food prices....Poverty isn't a choice for most!
