Short answer, Rick: as many times as he needs to. (It's not really about plotting out a course and sticking to it, come what may... it's about being flexible and willing to re-examine things as needed. Wouldn't that be prudent?)

Glad Obama is taking his time, listening to many voices before making a decision. There was a guest on Morning Joe this morning who spoke very eloquently against sending in more troops. Similarity to Vietnam is frightening.

Sorry Rick we created Vietnam as well and did not have to go there. Iraq was also Vietnam and even those on the right knew this but some went against their own fears and plunged us into a war with no end. The lessons from the past were never learned, much like the Chinese proverb "I dreamed alot of new paths, I woke and walked my old one"

You know, Harold - with Obama's obvious propensity for war, I'm surprised the troops aren't marching on Glenwood right now. Quick - go peer out the window!!

Wait a minute, Harold - let me get this straight: If a war was started under Bush's watch... then it was really the Senator's fault. But the wars still happening under Obama's watch are strictly Obama's fault? How does that work? Are you saying that Bush was so ineffective and inept that he couldn't even run the country, despite being the President... and Congress had to step in and take over for him? (Interesting - considering that Bush made changes, allowing him more executive decision-making abilities than the presidency ever had before... ) Funny, Harold, how assigning responsibility is so flexible in your mind. Bush/Afghanistan = Harold's full-out support. Obama/Afghanistan = Harold's condemnation, daily. You're a real piece of work, man.

Rick C: You say "it is becoming clear that Obama is receiving advice from two very different sides." I certainly hope that is the case.In fact, I hope he is receiving advice from 3-4 or even 5, very different sides. We all know what happens when a president is blinded, and listens to only one side. They make gigantic mistakes and political blunders of historic proportions, costing thousands of innocent people their lives. Had the president's predesessor listened to more than one story, on one side, he could have avoided the quagmire we now find ourselves in and quite possibly, would not have been categorized, as he is, by most historians, as one of, if not the, worst president in American history.

Rick C, wasn't it you, and Larry that called the Washington Post nothing but a liberal news paper? I think the president is fully capable of making a decision, but first he must weigh in all the issues. What troubles me is when Bush decided to attack Iraq, we really didn't have enough troops in Afghanistan, which meant they had to moved slowly. Our troops can stand down just the same, and await word if reinforces come, or pull up stakes. Some of you give the impression that as our president decides, troops, are dying. None of our troops are being over-run, our objective is to send troops to carry out more missions, which means pressing on ward. The road side bombs, and sniper shootings are going to happen whether we have 40 thousand troops, or 100 thousand. The Taliban is a tribe that can lay low for years if need be, then rise up and strike. They seem to always find people that will harbor them, and their line of communication is steadfast and effective. People keep forgetting nothing comes easy when you fight in the enemies back yard. Rick C where is Bin Ladden? Did we find those WMD yet? Hey Rick C where is your white hood?
