Barb - Health care does not equal health insurance... did you mean to say "insurance"? -- And, to clarify - the $130 I spend a month on cigarettes and cable tv would not cover health insurance costs for myself and my kids. You can factor out everything else you mentioned - as none of those apply to me. Sometimes, as some of us know, it's not a matter of priorities... but a matter of finances. And when you're talking (for example) $350/month (or more)... and then factor in a $1000 deductible per person annually... for a family of 3 or 4 (or more) - where's the affordability??

Personally, I think the cost of health care is due to high service costs from the service providers, with no complaints from the insurance industry - who simply raise their premiums. If a hospital can buy OTC tylenol for $.04 per pill, why are they charging the patient $5.00-$8.00 for that same pill? How many people know that the hospital will charge you $12 for that little bottle of lotion in your bedside drawer? Those infamous blue slippers? At least $15/pr.

barb - they may not be able to write of the entire cost of a capital expense the first year, but they can write off part of it. It is also possible to write off the entire amount of a capital expense - it simply has to meet the guidelines and one has to submit the proper form. And profits are figured AFTER all income and expenses have been figured, not before. How do you figure profit before expenses? Do you work as an accountant?

The only reason heath care costs are so high is because of all the people who get it for free. The first thing that should be done is charge EVERYONE who gets care to pay something. Again, I ask if the people who say they can't afford to get medical care if they purchase booze, cigarettes, expensive TV's, ATV's, snowmobiles, tattoos, cable or satelite, cell phones and the add ons, electronic games, ipods, battery operated cars for their kids, if they gamble, go on vacation, go out to eat, etc. We all know in many cases it's a matter of priorities.

Do those of you talking about "profit" know that a company's "profit" is calculated before capital expenses like purchasing equipment, etc? They are not allowed to deduct capital expenses - they must be depreciated over a long period of time. So even though the company has spent the money in l year to upgrade their facility or for research & development, they can NOT us that as an expense in that year. What they can not deduct shows up in their "profit".
