Great Society Programs did not destroy black families, being treated as second class or less citizens did. My gosh, it hasn't been that long since a young black man was beaten and dragged behind a truck by a bunch of white boys just because he was black. It hasn't been that long that black "dolls" have been hung by nooses, including one last year that represented Obama. This is what has kept some black families in poverty and thankfully the government stepped in and mandated companies to have x amount of people of another color and women, otherwise the ones that have strived for a better future may never have had the opportunity. You are correct when you say "society" because that is a main part of what has happened, society, the people.

I was reading your letter and know what you are writing about until,,, you said, "Why are people so willing to give up so much of their God-given rights and put those rights in the hands of government?"...... Please explain what "God given right" means and what we are losing to the government that "God" gave us? Everything you stated is manmade, not God made. DO NOT bring God into politics and your "rights" as you state. None of that has anything to do with God. You should be ashamed of yourself for even thinking it does and then write about it to others. Shame on you.

Janet, I guess we'll have to agree to disagree. I guess I was just not very fortunate in that I grew up in a faith-based family where my parents were active in church, school, and community, and who had the strong belief that we,all of us, including the government ( as the government is by the people, of the people, and for the people) are called to help others. Some of us believe we are to help the widow, the orphan, the wounded, the injured, the disabled, the downtrodden, the disadvantaged. It's not easy to want to help others. All of us are naturally turned in on self. Some of us are never able to develop compassion, empathy, and concern for our fellow human beings. Thank God there are many who are able to do so. Hubert H. Humphrey once said the mark of any great society is how it treats those in the dawn of life, its children, those in the dusk of life, its elderly, and those in the shadows of life, its handicapped. Glad to hear that you are totally independent and don't need or use any programs or assistance provided by the government. Good for you. Best of luck. Have a great day.

Great Letter Roger. Dan you are so off. Compassion isn't the Government distributing OPM -- compassion is the individual helping his fellow man with his own money. I believe the Gov't was established by the founding fathers and it's purpose would be to do for us what we cannot do. Most all citizens are able to work and provide for themselves and their families the essentials, food, clothing, shelter, etc. What I cannot do as an individual is protect myself from some 3rd world dictator that would like to drop a nuke on our cities. I can't really build the infastructure that it would take to make this country work (Road/bridges, etc.) When the Gov't starts doing for people what they can and should do for themselves it takes away their initiative, their pride and their self worth. Just look how the Great Society Programs have destroyed the Black families. It is not compassionate to give someone something that he can acheive himself. If your looking for the Gov't to give you everything -- you will have a Gov't that can also take everything you have.

This letter doesn't make any sense. Many, if not most, of the industries that are mentioned were not, and would not have been operating profitably without some kind of assistance. People slam the government so much and seem to fail to realize that we are the government. We, the people, are the government. What much of it seems to boil down to is people are fine when the government has programs that benefit them, personally, but then get upset when others are assisted. Those of you who rip the government, why don't you stop using any and all programs and assitance that comes from the government. In fact, maybe we should we do away with all government assistance and programs. No more military spending, no more government health care, or Medicare, no more helping battered women and children, no more schools, no more money on transportation, no assisting nursing homes, no more police officers, fire departments, conservation programs, no more higher education funding. We can go on and on. Let's not help anyone. Forget what we learn in our Judeo-Christian scriptures and other Holy and sacred writings. Let's not help anyone. Everyone for themselves... Is that how most people would really want things? Obviously not. There is no perfect system. By and large, we have a pretty good system with checks and balances and conservatives and progressives that serve to balance each other out. Bob P. your comment about an open mind after you have stated that President Obama is a dictator and we won't have any freedoms left is laughable. Do you really believe that Pres. Obama is a dictator? Do you really believe that any elected U.S. official wants to take away freedoms rather than protect them? Get real...

Roger, There is tremendous outrage over the gov't raping us. The media has been shut down from reporting it. All except ofcourse Fox News. They are literally taking our Constitution and using it as toilet paper. Thank you for the letter!!!!!!!!!!!

Roger very good points. Every thing you said is true. We are in a country that the government wants complete control of every part of our lives. We have a president that acts more like a dictator than a voice for the people. If things keep going and the lies keep coming about how great things are getting we won't have any freedoms left. Soon there will be comments about how everything is OK from the sheep that post here. An open mind is what we each need and believe what we see not what we are told to believe.
