Barb, if that's the way you see it and believe it to be about dems and reps, why haven't the reps ever done anything to change welfare?

Barb, extremely well put. I like how you very plainly state the difference between the lib concept of compassion and the conservative concept. Very, very true. There is no such thing as a truely happy person who had not EARNED their own self respect.

The welfare reforms in the 90's made things better but the DFL legislature did not adopt many of the new regulations like Wisc. did. Their welfare roles dropped in half. MN rolls decreased but if there are fewer people on welfare we would need fewer people working in social services so that gives no incentive to get people off welfare. In Obama's stimulus bill most of the 90's regulations reducing welfare was stripped out and changed the rules back to pre-90 reform. So I don't think he would do anything to make things better. As a matter of fact, I believe he wants as many people dependent on the government as he can get because they usually add up to Dem votes. Dems demonstrate compassion by how many people they can get on the government dole while Conservatives demonstrate compassion by how many people no longer need help because they are able to make it on their own.

Kevin, I did apoligize to you on the other article about wrestling.... As far as I remember about the reform in the 1990s, it was a lifetime limit of 5 years and recipients must be looking for work or working x amount of hours each month to receive their help. I don't know what happened to any of it because the case a few weeks ago had welfare for many years while they both worked under different names. I remember when this was passed and I felt relieved that people would be made to finally try and support themselves and then that was it. It's like it got passed and then locked away in a dark closet somewhere, or could we all have had the same dream and thought it was real?

I wonder what other country I could sneak into illegally and then get to them to give me their citizen's tax money to live there, because I have no Job? There has to be one somewhere...maybe I could have a vacation after all. Are we going feed, cloth, provide health care and shelter to the next 9/11 attackers?? This is just insane!

Karen, there have been plenty of conservatives in charge and they did nothing to reform welfare. Your statement making this a liberal thing just blows.

You are correct that we need welfare reform, but FIRST the American people need to get honest answers from our Social Services, where are our dollars being spent? and on who? Stopping liberal government from giving all our hard earned income away to illegals, or people who refuse to work, even if they can?

Kevin - has either party even tried to fix welfare? They are aware of the problem, no doubt - but has anyone really tried to fix it? Any in-depth reform? I don't recall any.
