A person's character is pretty well developed by the time they are old enough to get married. That character needs to be judged before choosing to marry. Actually my husband was in the military when we got married and I had no idea how much money he would make - I just knew he was a person of excellent character. A parent has to work 1 1/2 years in order for their child to receive death benefits.

By the way, just because a man pays child support, that doesn't mean it will be a lot of money that will save the kids from poverty. If he was a low earner before, he'll still be a low earner and pay little for child support.

I guess women are suppose to see the future, according to some. Yep, she should have seen that car accident coming..... Yep, she should have known he was going to turn out to be an abuser.... Yep, she should have known he was going to skip town..... Yep, she should have known that he was going to turn into a druggie or alcoholic..... Women should see those things. They must be the great and powerful Oz. It sounds to me that the only reason you are with your husband is because HE could provide for YOU. Lame. By the way, I believe a person has to work enough years for their dependents to claim social security upon their death.

Government programs, Larry's opinion that it all should be handled by individual giving. I just wanted to point out that its bigger then a gift here and there. As a matter of fact its 42% of the kids just in Willmar. And individual giving would be a drop in the bucket of what's needed. Move to get a better job, where do you suggest everyone go? Keep in mind more workers available= lower wages!!! Denise, My intend wasn't to help you but to expose the magnitude of the problem and Larry's lame solution.

It shouldn't be this hard to find dead beats. These dead beats are working somewhere. States need to share info.

Then the questions is - why aren't the dads around? Again it goes back to a person's choices. Obviously those mom's chose the wrong dads and those dads should be made to be responsible for supporting their kids. That's a good thing for government to be doing.

The sad part is, most of these low wage jobs are filled by moms and they are the ones that end up financially responsible for the kids when the dad is not around for whatever reason. Compare entry level pay on jobs usually held by women verses men. Entry level jobs geared towards men pay a lot more than the entry level jobs geared towards women.

Casey - Read my 9:33 post. There will alway be people who don't mind lower paying jobs for various reasons such as they don't want the responsibility of the high paying positions or spend the time needed to get and stay there, or want to move where the better jobs are, etc.

Laurie- Yes, it's a choice. Oh, but don't forget about good ole "ambition" and "initiative." You libs always seem to forget that part of the equation. Many people "choose" to stay in the same old rut they're in. If they're content with that, fine. If you're content with making a low wage, don't scream for help from our govt. If you're actually in hard times, then by all means scream away.

Who said anything about starting at the top? It has been said numerous times it is a persons choice to achieve the American dream by seeking better paying employment. I just simple asked if every American did that, who would be left to work the lower paying jobs. How would Cub stay in business if every employee worked the high pay positions and they didn't have anybody to work the lower paying positions? They wouldn't have a business if they didn't have people working to keep shelves stocked and checkout customers. Admit it, every job position is needed, regardless of the pay scale. These very much needed positions do not keep a family out of poverty.
