I used to click on the obituaries right after perusing the home page headlines in my daily reading of the WCT online. As someone who lives out of the area, but who grew up in west central MN, the obituaries were an important section of the daily paper that I rarely missed. Almost weekly, one or more of the people who were an important part of my formative years will show up in the obituary section. I read every word of these brief life histories and I recalled when these people were a part of my life. Due to the new policy requiring payment for all but the most brief announcement of a person's passing, and extra charges for a picture, I hardly ever see an obit worth reading anymore. There is almost nothing of substance and scant reference to survivors or anything worthwhile to read about the person's life. It's sad that it all comes down to money. The WCT trying to wring a few bucks out of a grieving family is as unfortunate as a family being unwilling, or unable, to spend a few bucks to memorialize a loved one in the public newspaper for people far and wide to read. The end of meaningful obituaries is one more reason I seldom pull up the WCT website anymore- that and the right wing mental cases who dominate the comments section and who demonize everyone who doesn't join their paranoid and delusional world of extremely partisan politics. They thoroughly disgust me.
