Shannon don't forget though that still the largest group who receive county benefits are our elderly, so while I understand you point, it still doesn't meet the needs our address the real problem.

Easiest way to do this, if you receive benefits, you will work for the county in some form or fashion. Trash pick up, sweeping sidewalks, cleaning up yards for the elderly, something. Then if you do have a job, guess what, you will not have enough time to do the county jobs, and then the county will stop benefits. We worked for the money that the county is giving you, its time you work for that money, no more free rides!

Leaving race and drug abuse out of this because it only detracts from the issue we need to be working on ways that will stop this from happening. Where was the break down here? How do we connect employers with human services so that the right hand knows what the left hand is doing? How do we make it impossible to create false documents? Seems to me that these are the questions that should receive the bulk of the focus in discussions and leave race and addiction out of it.

Roger, I agree with you to use fingerprinting as a tool for identification. The police department is right across the street, teachers or those working as substitutes must be fingerprinted, anyone working in the public domain generally has to be fingerprinted. I don't believe the cost would be prohibitive and it would surely be made up by the decrease in potential fraud cases. It's so sad that people like you and I don't qualify for any help when we truly need it because we're honest about income and assets.

dumb laptop didn't let me finish... I was going to write that I am hispanic myself. I am smart enough to know that the comments being left are directed at people who use the system and make it harder on other deserving people and not hispanics in general. Have a great day everyone.

I agree with you Ron. I also don't understand why it is so easy to obtain a job using someone else's identification. The welfare department is a government office. The only way to stop identity theft is to not have privacy. I would love for the government to have a file on hand with my information, picture, fingerprints... etc. That way if someone went in to apply for assistance under with my information, my picture would pop up when my social security number was entered and the person would be caught immidiately. Having too much privacy has its disadvantages. I bet that if I got ahold of your birth certificate and went in to get an ID downtown, I would have one in no time. I am hispanic mys

Shows the result of political correctness. The next question would be are they legal? We need to have stricter rules and harsher penalties to discourage this habit. Just for the sake of discussion. If you get hired for a job you have to pass a drug test right? Why don't we ecourage our representatives to pass a law that you have to pass a drug test in order to get public assistance?
